Crystal L. Stewart-Batson was formally employed as a Police Communications Technician for the New York City Police Department and Public Safety Dispatcher for the City of Yonkers. Her passion for assisting people in crisis stemmed from her past interactions with social workers and others in the human services field. In July 2016, Crystal suffered a stroke and was forced to retire due to her diagnosis of global aphasia. Aphasia affected her ability to speak, comprehend and write. With the assistance of speech, occupational, and music therapy, as well as a membership in the Adler Aphasia Center, she has been diagnosed with mild aphasia and is thriving in her retirement. As a retiree, Crystal believes that people can make it despite their challenges, and her story proves her belief. Through her lived experience with Aphasia, Crystal was appointed by the Rockland Executive, Ed Day, to the Rockland County Disability Council. Shortly after, she was asked to be a part of the Adler Aphasia Center Board of Directors. Accepting these positions within organizations allowed her to be a voice for those in need while learning more about her passion and purpose. Lastly, after a nationwide search, she was chosen to be one of seven fellows in The Ladies of Hope Ministries, Pathways 4 Equity Career Fellowship, Cohort 1. Crystal’s perseverance under challenging situations manifests in her positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and detail-oriented persona. She is passionate about helping people from all walks of life, especially children. Her dedication to doing right by others and ensuring justice is what makes her an advocate for those who are vulnerable. Crystal is adamant about sharing her experience with youth and encouraging them that nothing is impossible She thrives off giving kids hope, which is the beacon of light that kids often can’t see.
